Commenting after new Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband revealed that the Government were changing the target to reduce carbon emissions by 60% by 2050 to 80%, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Roger Williams MP said:

"I am very pleased that the Government have finally accepted what we have been saying for some time - 60% is not enough.

"The science in this area has been very clear in suggesting that we need targets of 80% to avoid a catastrophic rise in global temperatures, and it has been surprising that the Government have taken so long to accept this.

"This move is welcome, but the Government's continuing refusal to include aviation and shipping emissions in any meaningful way is bitterly disappointing.

"Targets are one thing, now we must continue to make sure we take the action that is needed to cut emissions." ENDS
